What is meant by Transparency in Hospitality?

How transparent should hospitality leaders really be with their teams?

Transparency sounds simple.

In practice, it gets much harder when the conversation involves pay, tips, difficult decisions, organisational change or information people may not want to hear.

In this episode of Talking Hospitality, Timothy R Andrews is joined by Adena Cahill, Molly Davis, Joe McDonnell and Dan Hawkie to explore what transparency actually looks like in hospitality leadership, and why sending an email, posting a policy or putting something on a staff app does not necessarily mean you have communicated effectively.

The panel discusses:
• Why teams increasingly want to understand the why behind decisions
• The link between trust, transparency and leadership
• How to communicate difficult decisions without creating unnecessary uncertainty
• Why different people need information delivered in different ways
• When digital communication works, and when you still need a proper conversation
• Why briefings and debriefings remain underused in hospitality
• How leaders can listen to their teams without pretending every decision can be made by committee
• Why money, tips and tronc make transparency especially important

The conversation also looks at one of the most sensitive areas for hospitality teams: tips and tronc. The panel discusses why employees need clarity around how tipping policies work, how decisions are made and why putting something in writing does not automatically make the process fair.

The main takeaway? Transparency is not about telling everybody everything. It is about explaining what matters, being clear about the decisions you make and creating enough trust for people to ask questions when they do not understand.
