Finding Meaning at Work, Even When the Job Feels Dull

Finding Meaning at Work, Even When the Job Feels Dull

In the hospitality industry, we sell a dream of seamless luxury, excitement, and flawless experiences. But behind the scenes, the reality of our daily operations can sometimes feel like an endless loop.

Whether it is polishing a hundred wine glasses, entering endless inventory data, or resetting the exact same hotel room for the fiftieth time this month, the repetition can easily wear us down. While a certain amount of predictability allows us to feel a sense of security, too much of it can result in disengagement, leading us to switch onto "autopilot" just to endure the shift.

When you spend your days just going through the motions, you miss out on the vitality of your own life. So, how do we find meaning when the tasks at hand feel incredibly dull?

Meaning is Created, Not Found
When the daily grind feels tedious, it is easy to assume we are in the wrong job, or that we simply haven't found our "true calling". But as I explore in my Happier series, meaningful work is not a magical entity out there waiting to be discovered; it is something we must actively create for ourselves.

Taking ownership of your work experience is liberating, and it starts with reframing how you view your daily responsibilities.

To overcome the drudgery of dull tasks, we need to shift our mindset from focusing on what the job is, to what the job does.

The Power of the Prosocial Reframe
Psychological research shows that even the most seemingly meaningless task can be imbued with profound meaning when it is connected to a prosocial cause—meaning it brings a direct benefit to someone else.

Consider a fascinating study of hospital cleaners. Those who found deep enjoyment in their work didn't describe their jobs as low-skill cleaning; instead, they viewed themselves as "ambassadors and healers". They took ownership of their impact, going out of their way to do things like regularly change the pictures on the walls of comatose patients just to make the room feel nicer. Or consider the famous story of the janitor at NASA who, when
asked what his job was, replied, "I’m helping to put a man on the moon!".

In hospitality, we have the profound opportunity to apply this exact same lens.

Re-imagine your job from the perspective of the positive impact you are making. You are not just making a bed; you are crafting a safe sanctuary for a weary traveller. You are not just dropping a plate of food at a table; you are facilitating a space where a family can reconnect and share joy. When you look at your job through this prosocial lens, you realise that your work is fundamentally about making a positive difference in other people's lives.

Job Crafting: The #SBB Approach
Of course, a shift in mindset works best when paired with a shift in action. If a specific administrative or operational task is driving you to boredom, you can use the #SBB (Small But Big) approach to practice "job crafting".

If the "what" of the task cannot change because it is essential to the business, try changing the who, when, where, and how. Can you batch your most tedious invoices to a specific morning rather than letting them pile up? Can you set a 50-minute timer to gamify a repetitive task, rewarding yourself with a favourite coffee afterward?

Building small, creative systems around unpleasant items gives you a sense of autonomy and can transform them into something you no longer mind doing.

Your Next Steps
Finding meaning in a dull job isn't about toxic positivity or ignoring reality; it is about taking control of your own narrative. By connecting your daily, repetitive actions to the human joy they ultimately create, you protect yourself against burnout and build a sustainable, fulfilling career in hospitality.
